A second round of IRS raids on alleged slot machine and bookie operations across six states led to 14 arrests on federal wagering law charges. In sixteen sites, agents seized slot machines, telephones, scratch sheets, and betting equipment. some locations yielded arrests, others only empty raids and ongoing investigations.
President Eisenhower flew to Texas to deliver a foreign policy speech at Baylor University during commencement exercises. He would receive an honorary doctor of laws degree, his 38th since West Point, and meet with Texas politicians before returning home and then, weather permitting, head to his farm near Gettysburg for the weekend.
In Orangeburg South Carolina policewoman Caroline Kittrell tagged a car in a no parking zone. The vehicle belonged to Detective Jack Kemmerline. Yesterday Kemmerline tagged a car for a similar offense, which belonged to Mrs. Kittrell.

A crate of live polio virus spilled aboard a Capital Airlines DC4 after a warehouse mishap. The plane picked up 22 passengers in Baltimore en route to Pittsburgh. At the Max J. Zeller Co. plant south of Columbus a tank truck carrying naptha and gasoline exploded early today. Deputy sheriffs said driver Joshua Talbert, 24, of Columbus, was killed, his body reportedly “blown apart.” The blast also damaged a 10,000 gallon storage tank and a 20,000 gallon tanker, with fire burning 1 1/2 hours. Loss estimated between 50,000 and 75,000 dollars. cause not known.
Frost blankets parts of New England as record low temperatures sweep inland areas. Beford near Boston dropped to 31 and Chicopee to 32 while northern regions dipped into the 20s threatening fruit crops. Saturday and Sunday should be warmer with highs near 80 and a chance of showers on Sunday. Middletown posted a 62 degree high yesterday at 4 30 p.m. and a 40 degree low this morning at 5 30 a.m.
The National Safety Council declines to present its grand award for overall traffic safety performance in 1955 citing a worsening national safety picture. Only Minnesota and four cities Dallas Seattle Oklahoma City and Palo Alto earned merit awards for grades of 70 percent or higher in all categories.
In Lake Wales Florida a woman described as a model mother killed her three daughters Shirley 5 Pamela 3 and Jar 1 then shot herself. Police report she placed the children in their beds before the fatal shots and left a note for her husband Mark Calbeck.
EDGELY Pa Governors George M Leader of Pennsylvania and Robert Meyner of New Jersey shake hands on the center span of a new bridge over the Delaware River as the last link in a turnpike system opens. The 25 million dollar mile long span joins Pennsylvania and New Jersey toll roads. The longer system now connects New York City to the Ohio Indiana border with future Indiana Turnpike completion promising faster travel toward Chicago.
Kenneth Malone, 55, a Clark County farmer from South Vienna, was fatally gored by a bull in a pasture Thursday night. The bull attacked him while he remained atop Malone before farm workers found him.
A man was killed by a mysterious blast on a North Side street in Chicago. Police found the body with severed legs, and identify papers listed C. W. Campbell 58 from the South Side. A car matching the name held rifle cartridges and race sheets with $522 in pockets.
Richmond Indiana police chased a stolen car driven by Henry Moore 47 from Dayton Ohio at speeds around 100 mph. Moore who had robbed Charles Koehler 49 in Indianapolis earlier seized a gun from Marshal Earl Gentry of Cambridge City and rammed through a roadblock, the car’s top sheared off by a semi trailer before crashing into a pole. Moore died. police noted a long record.
LONDON Premier Nikolai Bulganin extends invitations to British Air Minister Nigel Birch and senior RAF officers to attend Soviet Aviation Day ceremonies in Moscow on June 24. An Air Ministry spokesman said the invitation is under consideration and it came through the Soviet Embassy.
Mrs. Simon Karp of Toledo directs her husband to pull closer to the curb. He presses the gas, striking a parking meter, two parked cars, and a truck before ramming two more vehicles. Mrs. Karp sustains a shoulder injury. husband says the gas pedal stuck.
Washington The Army presses for more air power and planes to track missiles and transport troops and cargo. The fact sheet notes no demand for airstrike control, but argues some aviation must be under field Army command during training and combat. A change would alter the 1952 pact limiting Army aircraft to 5,000 pounds and operations 50 to 100 miles deep.
Swantee the 20 year old chimpanzee from Como Park Zoo faces removal after tossing items at visitors. Park superintendent Lamont Kaufman said the Air Force will ship the chimp to Holloman Field New Mexico for a space flight test. The Air Force will also acquire two more chimps from Toledo and Evansville while Swantee, bought a decade ago from the St Louis Zoo, is valued at 400 dollars.
The U S Government leased three Nike guided missile sites from Cleveland for ten years at a rent of one dollar per site annually. The agreement covers occupancy and operation by the government for national defense purposes.
In a foreign policy address at a Bays for University commencement, President Eisenhower called communism a gigantic failure and urged America's great universities to help needy free nations by establishing modern science education centers. He also advocated a nearer European union as a pillar of free strength and urged free nations to cooperate in trade and aid.
Cleveland. Sgt. Ronald Sarnecki received a frantic call from his mother Sophie Sarnecki, 44, who urged him to hurry. He found her shot in the tavern, a .38 revolver beside her, with powder burns on her gown and damage to the door, cabinet, and refrigerator. She died en route to Marymount Hospital. Police questioned Henry Sarnecki, the husband, and a 50-year-old man was held for questioning. Robbery did not appear to be motive as cash remained in the till.
In London the Chelsea river fete for Felicity and Penelope Drew saw 300 guests aboard the Royal Princess. A guest jumped into the Thames after bets, was rescued, and returned aboard as police arrived. The Duke of Kent did not swim. The incident drew light commentary from attendees including Mrs. Drew.
