AP analysis notes both Moscow and Washington act cautiously amid Arab Israeli uproars. Pravda links crisis to Vietnam and pins blame on the United States, citing the 6th Fleet in the Mediterranean and efforts to oust pro Soviet regimes in the Arab East.
U S warplanes ended Buddha day truce and raided North Vietnam heartland. Targets included Thai Nguyen rail yard near Hanoi and Red River delta as air and naval forces pressed south along the border. U S and South Vietnam reported multiple truce violations with 92 incidents and 16 allied deaths.
The UN Security Council planned a special meeting urged by Canada and Denmark amid fear of a Soviet veto. Thant’s withdrawal of the UN Middle East force from the Egyptian border drew calls for council action to reinforce efforts for peace, with U S backing for speedy support to Thant’s Cairo mission.
The 5-year-old Richard Jr. is linked to Pearce who left his post as a top aide to Lt. Gen. Dunn in San Antonio. Pearce claimed conscience reasons for leaving and reportedly arrived at Libertad Airport near Havana. State Department confirmed asylum. his former wife says Pearce took their son on vacation and has not been heard from.
In Louisville, a tight Republican governor race saw Louie B. Nunn gain a hairbreadth lead over Marlon W. Cook as absentee ballots could decide one of Kentucky’s closest primaries in memory. Cook accused Nunn of bigotry while Nunn attacked Cook over civil rights issues. Cook is Roman Catholic. In the Democratic race Henry Ward led, with 2,776 of 3,021 precincts reporting giving him 82,680 to Hap Chandler’s 82,038 for second. Governor Breathitt cannot succeed himself.
Weather forecast indicates a cloudy and warmer night with a low in the mid-50s. Thursday and the rest of the period trend warmer than normal into the weekend, followed by cooler and probably wet conditions. Yesterday’s high reached 72 with an overnight low of 48 and a 11 am reading of 66.
Cairo reports Egypt has mined the Gulf of Aqaba and patrols at the entrance to Israel's waterway while guns train on the gulf mouth. U Thant meets Egyptian officials as Johnson backs Israel. The Soviet Union backs the Arabs and warns of strong resistance. British ships standby in the Mediterranean as the U.N. Security Council convenes amid debates over U.N. troops and Soviet veto fears.
