In 1960 national parks reported 165 visitor deaths with nearly half from traffic. Park Service Director Hartzog cited 75 static motor vehicle fatalities, 43 on parkways including 20 on the Natchez Trace Parkway, 10 on the Baltimore Washington Parkway, and 8 on the George Washington Memorial Parkway. He urged highway design to curb speeding and listed other fatal causes such as drownings, falls, lightning, burns, exposure, and other accidental deaths.
