In Elizabeth New Jersey two nine year old boys were sentenced for a March holdup at a tavern. A bartender, 86 year old Patrick Vahey, faced a "don’t move" moment as a $2 revolver pointed at him. The gun carrier was sent to Jamesburg State Home for Boys for rehabilitation, while the lookout received a suspended sentence and probation.
Washington reports indicate the United States weighs broader Southeast Asia military action if crises in Laos and South Vietnam persist. Secretary of State Rusk warned the war could expand against North Viet Nam while a carrier task force operates in the South China Sea.
Premier Souvanna Phouma announced Laos would seek military and economic aid from the United States Britain and France to defend its unity as U S reconnaissance jets continued over Lao territory held by Pathet Lao forces. Officials noted the flights would persist as a warning to communists and that the Laotian request had not yet been received.
Boston firefighters battled a massive Friday blaze in Andrew Square that swept two blocks, destroyed 35 three family houses and left over 300 people homeless. The fire caused about 750000 in damages and no deaths were reported though 31 were hospitalized and many treated for smoke inhalation. Acting Fire Chief John E. Clougherty praised crews for halting the blaze as residents fled, many elderly or with young children.
An hepatitis outbreak at Kilby Prison in Montgomery Alabama has killed three inmates and hospitalized nineteen. The most recent death was David McLeod who died Thursday night. Commissioner Frank Lee said cases began near year’s start and a blood plasma program started in December 1962 was halted though doctors found no link between the program and the outbreaks.

Washington AP A Defense Department official charged Life magazine edited letters written by Capt Edwin G Shank Jr before his death in South Vietnam to misrepresent his views. Assistant Secretary Arthur Sylvester released his letter accusing editors of removing sentences and altering content without notice, while Life defended preserving spirit despite minor edits.
The Confederate burial area in Springfield’s National Cemetery closes under federal law. Martha Ann Hadden, 92, widow of a Texas Confederate cavalryman, was the last approved applicant, with a Feb 1 1962 deadline for veterans and dependents. Her husband Thomas Henry Hadden died June 9 1939.
Two hooded gunmen snatched Madeleine Dassault near their Bois de Boulogne home as Marcel Dassault, builder of the Mirage IV, and chauffeur Louis Dubois were pistol whipped. A ransom of 2 million dollars was later mentioned in a call to Le Monde amid a broad manhunt and roadblocks along southern routes.
FBI and sheriff deputies hunt two masked gunmen who robbed the Farmersville Bank of Miamisburg taking about 50000 dollars. Four employees including manager Robert Sorrell and tellers Rob ert Fornshell Thelma Wheeler and Juanita Focht were bound gagged and assaulted. The robbers escaped in a car after delaying the vault opening and stealing currency. Sorrell required hospital treatment for abrasions.
Perry Zinzigk, 45, was sentenced to life imprisonment for second degree murder in the West End tavern killing of barmaid Lillian Greer, 44. A jury convicted him last Friday after Greer’s body, found November 23, was buried under freshly poured concrete in the tavern basement. Zinzigk claimed the gun went off accidentally during an argument.
A 47 year old Ohio Highway Department employee George D Dy of Covington was killed Friday when a mower he operated on Interstate 75 just north of U S 36 was struck by a car. Dy was identified by authorities and the incident occurred in Piqua Ohio.
AP report: Clarence Walton eight died from injuries after a freight train knocked him from a trestle near his home in Maysville Kentucky. He was brought to a Cincinnati hospital and died Friday.
Mortimer M. Caplin resigns as commissioner of Internal Revenue effective July 10, with President Johnson expressing regret. Appointed Feb 7, 1961, Caplin was a University of Virginia law professor and Charlottesville lawyer who modernized tax collection including early use of electronic computers.
