High School Choir Bus Tragedy Leaves 28 Dead
A chartered bus carrying a coed high school choir tour crashed on a curved ramp near Martinez California killing 28. Among the dead were 27 students and one adult music teacher Christina Estabrook. 24 survived with 11 in critical condition. The driver Evan Prothero is in semi critical condition. The bus smashed through guardrail and flipped onto its roof after leaving Yuba City. Rescue teams freed passengers as cranes righted the vehicle. The trip began in Yuba City after a concert in Orinda and was to end at Fisherman's Wharf San Francisco. The bus was last inspected May 1975 and due for inspection within a month.
