Moon glows coppery during a total lunar eclipse visible across the United States and Canada. The event begins 10:59 p m Saturday with totality from 1 03 to 2 33 a m EDT, offering a rare celestial show with no viewing hazards.
Laotian government spokesmen announced a request for Washington to remove the U S Agency for International Development from Laos and to hand over aid materials. The move follows two weeks of anti American demonstrations in Vientiane Luang Prabang and Savannakhet led by students demanding expulsion of all AID personnel.
Iran says it knows the identities of three Marxist guerrillas who killed two U S Air Force colonels near Tehran. Police have identified the suspects who stopped the Americans, shot them, and fled after leaving leaflets. The officers were Col. Paul R. Shaffer Jr. and Lt. Col. Jack J. Turner, both 45, en route to a military base with the American advisory mission.
Air Force Col. Paul R. Shaffer Jr. of Bryan was killed by assassins in Iran with less than four weeks left on his tour. His father, Paul R. Shaffer Sr., a retired engineer from Archbold, said a premonition had frightened him for his son’s safety even after combat duty in Southeast Asia. Shaffer was born in Dayton, grew up near Bryan, and graduated from Ohio State University in 1953 with an agriculture degree. He enrolled in Air Force ROTC, trained as a fighter pilot, flew jets, and commanded a squadron in Germany before supervising the Royal Iranian Air Force about three years earlier.
Twenty three Americans died May 13 in a Thailand helicopter crash tied to Mayaguez rescue plans but not counted as combat casualties. Eighteen were Air Force security police assigned to form a commando unit. five others were crew and a mechanic. Pentagon notes the mission was preparatory and not part of the execute plan.
Consumers may pay more for hamburgers and steaks after wholesale and live cattle prices surged this week to the highest in 20 months. Prices moved up to 2 per hundredweight from the prior week, and DOE economist Larry Duewer warned a ten cent hike per pound for hamburger could follow.
Three Stanford University students and a Dutch citizen were reportedly kidnapped by 40 armed men from the Gombe animal reserve on the Tanzanian side of Lake Tanganyika. Victims named were Barbara Smuts, Kenneth Smith, Carrie Hunter, and Emilie Bergman.

Montgomery County sheriff's department issued a statewide alert for a Dayton man in connection with the shooting death of Deputy Randal Richter 23 of Englewood. Richter was dispatched to a suspicious car, radioed its license, and was shot in the head before backup arrived. The department said the deputy's weapon was not drawn.
Irwin A. Pawelski, 54, of Chicago, paralyzed and in a wheelchair, was moved for treatment on May 1 and later found slumped over in an elevator bank. VA officials investigate to assess responsibility and procedures. hospital says the incident did not cause his death on May 18.
