Negro college heads urge Nixon for broad civil rights changes
A group of presidents from 15 predominately black colleges met with President Nixon for two hours to present a six point plan to ease racial tension. They urged reaffirmation of federal protection for black lives, broader inclusion in policy making, a presidential conference with black students, gun control on campuses, higher funding for black education programs, and a black deputy attorney general to oversee civil liberties. Nixon gave no promises but said he would consider the proposals. The White House said the session aimed to hear leaders and discuss community relations and policy. The talks also touched on police actions at Jackson State and Kent State.
