Paris reports a sweeping labor crisis with nearly 6 million workers on strike and 250 factories idle. Trains, airports, mines, and ports halted as De Gaulle faces a censure vote while opposition labs with unions rally to topple Pompidou's cabinet.
In Paris and capitals worldwide US officials expect Britain France and the Soviet Union to aid Vietnam peace efforts. Harriman and Thuy will meet de Gaulle while Britain’s Stewart heads to Moscow to confer with Gromyko. Soviet influence on Hanoi grows as China’s stance hardens amid internal crisis.
North Vietnamese forces fire 500 mortar rounds and 100 weight rockets at four U.S. headquarters near Hue in one of the war’s heaviest coordinated shellings. Eight Americans and 21 enemy soldiers die. 51 Americans wounded as Camp Eagle endures a three hour assault.
Ricky Thorne a 16 year old boy abandoned by his mother in 1965 at a Miami airport is housed at Lapeer State Home and Training School. He communicates by nods and shakes and has not spoken since brain fever likely caused retardation. Doctors see no vocal cord problem and debate brain damage as a cause while Florida officials report Ricky’s care costs and parental billing if found.
President Johnson, in New York at an Arthritis Foundation event, rejected a view that the nation is a sick or racially divided society. He warned against bad mouthing America and urged patience and optimism to solve national problems.
In Rome the center-left coalition led by Aldo Moro captured about 60 percent of Senate votes with the Christian Democrats, Unified Socialists, and Republicans holding a solid majority. The results show gains for the Communists and Proletarian Socialist party, while Liberals, Fascists, and Monarchists lost ground. Socialist President Giuseppe Saragat is expected to ask Moro to form a new government.
The Southwest Ohio Miami Valley region expects fair skies and cool conditions tonight with a low in the upper 30s to low 40s. Wednesday should be mostly sunny with possible scattered showers and continued cool temperatures. Yesterday’s high reached 64 degrees and the morning low was 44.
