A tornado traveled over 100 miles across northeastern Kansas and into Missouri Thursday night, leaving shattered farms and villages in its wake. Despite extensive warnings, one person died and 28 were injured as the funnel struck just west of Topeka near sunset, with light enough to outline the deadly path.
Five climbers stranded on Mount McKinley faced a new setback as a jet helicopter developed mechanical trouble and had to return to Fort Greeley for repairs after takeoff from a 10,000 foot base camp in perfect weather. A second helicopter was en route to Summit to be equipped with skis for a planned 2 pm EST ascent while a C123 plane prepared to air drop adrenaline and blood plasma to a sick woman. Rescuers, including 47 Seattle Mountain Rescue Council members, proceeded on foot up the mountain as hopes persisted for a multi day operation with the sick climber's husband urging a helicopter exit if possible. Paul Crews hinted at attempting North Peak if in good condition.
An escaped chimpanzee was located inside a public library holding the Bible in one hand and Darwin's Origin of Species in the other. The ape quipped it seeks to learn if it is its brother's keeper or its keeper's brother.
A powerful tornado carved a wide path from Wamego to Meriden and Edgerton, leveling buildings, destroying a tavern where Mildred Handley was found dead, and damaging a radio tower near Brookfield. Homes collapsed, rain turned Meriden to mud, and rescuers warned towns as a second twister possibly struck near Brookfield. Dick Cantillian raced to alert Rossville before his own farm suffered losses.
Thorshavn Faroe Islands AP An American ambassador has visited these lonely northern Atlantic islands for the first time. Val Peterson, U.S. ambassador to Denmark, departed on a U.S. destroyer Thursday after a week’s visit.
Prime Minister Harold Macmillan revealed Khrushchev told him the Soviet leader would not negotiate unless the United States condemned spy flights and punished those responsible. Khrushchev reiterated demands at the opening, stalling the summit and prompting Macmillan to warn in Parliament of grave implications and new dangers. He noted Eisenhower and Khrushchev avoided handshakes and that the Western Big Three faced a possibly deliberate Soviet policy shift.
The forecast shows a slowing warm front bringing showers possible today and tonight with a high near 88. Showers likely end Saturday as cooler air arrives, with Sunday highs around 78. Middletown yesterday reached 81 by 7 pm and a 61 degree low this morning.
London AP reports Frank Sinatra was not at fault for a Hollywood parking lot melee last Saturday. Hopkins aka Big John, Samson Davis Jr.'s road manager, says he separated fighting men and was not Sinatra's bodyguard. The parking lot complaint against Sinatra remains in abeyance as investigators seek more evidence.
In Tokyo angry students clashed with police outside Prime Minister Nobusuke Kishi's residence during parliament's first approval of Japan's security pact with the United States. The accord allows U S bases for ten more years in exchange for defense commitments, and now moves to the Upper House for ratification.
London report that Queen Mother Elizabeth plans to marry Sir Arthur Penn was denied by Penns lawyers who said the Daily News story is wholly without foundation. The report claimed permission from Queen Elizabeth II and cited royal protocol and family tension.
President Eisenhower flew from Lisbon to return to Washington after a 24 hour stay on his way home from the Paris summit. He planned to report to the American people on the failure of his peace talks with Soviet Premier Khrushchev.
Khrushchev told East Berlin audiences that the German problem will be held in balance until a new summit within six to eight months can settle it. He warned of hidden struggles in the United States and urged coexistence over cold war. In Moscow Tass reported a Soviet experimental space ship fault during reentry. London experts speculate Anastass Mikoyan, long No 2 in the Kremlin, could fall from favor.
CAPE CANAVERAL AP The Air Force fired an Atlas missile on a record flight aiming about 9,000 miles past the tip of South Africa into the Indian Ocean. The test, planned for about 52 minutes, sought the longest surface-to-surface Atlas distance, exceeding prior records.
Suzanna Theriot, 16, was bitten by a large shark 150 feet offshore at Hidden Beach while on a parochial school outing. Doctors amputated her left leg below the knee. her condition was listed as serious but improving. The attack is linked to warming currents and northward movement of warm-water fish along California's coast.
