Two Middletown High School students Myrtle Bond and Everett Egelston top the new W. W. Sebald Self-Reliance Awards night at the Manchester Hotel. Sealed results were read by Armco Steel Corp. president Sebald, with winners from Middletown Fenwick Lemon-Monroe and Middletown high schools receiving cash prizes and recognition alongside 11 finalists.

Evacuation Of French Soldiers Tops 110 Mark

Wounded evacuation from Dien Bien Phu reached 110 as helicopters and light planes shuttle to the fortress. About 120 more wounded were expected to reach Hanoi, with 753 total to be flown out. Genevieve de Galard Terraube, the lone French nurse, was not confirmed for release. Wounded are sent to Luang Prabang and then Hanoi for operations. In Saigon, Cao Dai forces were integrated into the national force, though steps toward nationalization remain to be taken.

South Koreans Vote For New National Assembly

South Koreans from Seoul to bomb damaged towns voted to elect a new National Assembly in an off year test of President Syngman Rhee. Man Slashes Woman and Child After Jail Escape

In Goshen Maryland a knife wielding man believed to be an escaped Army mental patient held a farm tenant family for six hours. He slashed Adele Thomas and her 5 year old daughter Barbara Lee before escaping in a stolen truck. Police identify the suspect as Pvt Fred C Pierron of Silver Spring. He escaped from Walter Reed Hospital after scaling a fence and later assaulted drivers during pursuit.
