Washington reports a new delay in poliomyelitis vaccination as no further Salk vaccine releases are promised for days. Health officials cite a “look see” at the overall picture while continuing clearances for Parke Davis Lilly vaccines and rechecks of other manufacturers.
The U S Public Health Service reports 206 new polio cases for the week ending May 14, up 30 percent from the prior week. Among inoculated individuals cases remained unchanged at 177, while 23 cases occurred in non vaccinated contacts of vaccinated children. Seven or more suspect cases are being investigated across several states with five deaths among vaccinated persons.
Frederick M. Brett 44 of Columbus, an Ohio Bell Telephone Co. executive, was killed when his car struck a utility pole near the intersection of U. S. 40 and Ohio 56 northwest of London.
Senate investigators hear conflicting testimony about cash payoffs and gifts tied to armed forces procurement. Witnesses recount gifts including a coat for Mrs. Hort, a home freezer, lingerie, and $50 bills to Navy inspector Julius Goldman who called them loans. Rubin denies bribe claims, while Goldman says the funds were advances and suggests ongoing confidential work for the Navy.
Sen. Hubert Humphrey voices fear that Soviet moves to ease European tensions mask a plan to infiltrate Southeast Asian governments and cut them off from the free world. He urges a reassessment of U.S. Asia policy and warns of Communist infiltration tactics.
Oakland police say a 14 year old boy admitted killing Stanley Frank Jr. with a hatchet. Dr. Douglas Kelley says the youth enjoyed torture themed comics and told police the act was deliberate. District Attorney Coakley considers commitment, juvenile prosecution, or formal murder indictment.
The forecaster predicted partly cloudy and cooler conditions tonight and tomorrow. Yesterday’s forecast of 70s proved wrong as temperatures reached 84 at 4 45 p.m. This morning’s low was 47 degrees. Tomorrow’s high may reach the mid 70s with a similar morning low.
President Eisenhower rejects the 8.6 percent pay raise for about 500000 postal workers and urges a fairer bill for taxpayers. Senate Democrats plan to try an override next Tuesday with leaders Johnson and Knowland guiding the vote.
Rain swamped Brady Ballinger and Eastland Texas with widespread flooding causing river crests near peak levels. The storms halted traffic along U S Highway 80 and the Texas and Pacific line while 60 to 75 families evacuated. Authorities reported the worst was over though more storms were forecast across the region.
General Maxwell D. Taylor, newly appointed Army chief of staff, said peace "can be assured only by adequate military power." He urged Americans to support continuous military strength for an indefinite period. The remarks were recorded for broadcast to U S armed forces in the Far East on Armed Forces Day.
Ohio CIO Council plans a November ballot measure to raise unemployment pay to 50 dollars weekly for 39 weeks, from the current 30 dollars for 26 weeks. They must gather 77 934 valid signatures by August 15. Union leaders said petitions will circulate in 90 days after legislature stalled action.
In Inglewood California a 31 year old fire engine burst into flames at a fire station injuring two firefighters. Charles Phillips 26 suffered first to third degree burns on hands and arms while Harold Kingery 41 received minor burns. Damage to the station and equipment was estimated at 7000 to 10000 dollars. The blaze started while cleaning a gasoline sediment bowl on an old standby engine.
The five-power U N Disarmament subcommittee paused two weeks of talks in London after 12 weeks of negotiations. Delegates from the United States Soviet Union Britain France and Canada will reconvene June 1 in New York to review progress and remaining gaps on arms reduction nuclear bans and a world disarmament agency. U S delegate James J Wadsworth said gaps have narrowed but much work remains to ensure effective safeguards.
Brig. Gen. Burgess told a Selfridge Field audience that the Russian air force matches or exceeds the U S in performance with more aircraft. He cited two new bombers similar to the B 52 and a four engine turboprop model with counterrotating propellers, and warned of Russian missile development prospects.
James Webb a 48 year old Irish farmhand who ran away with Susan Dymoke 23 daughter of Britain's old aristocracy turned out to be a married man with two children. He admitted deceiving her and her family and said Susan would not return to her relatives. A wedding certificate showed he married Mrs Mary Webb in 1937. Police said no further action. Susan's brother Captain J Dymoke holds the Queen's Champion title and carried the royal standard at the 1953 coronation. Susan's mother mourned the ruined life.
In Portrush Northern Ireland Mrs Jessie Valentine 40 year old Scottish veteran defeated American amateur champion Barbara Romack 7 and 6 in the 36 hole final Romack of Sacramento California battled a swollen left ankle from wear and tear and was never in the running
Coroner Robert E Zipf will perform an autopsy on Robert Charles Babcock 39 of 206 Wildwood Ct Marion found dead in a partly filled bathtub at the Miami Hotel Dayton. Preliminary examined indicates death from natural causes.
