Champaign Countians Target World Corn Yield Record

Champaign County launches a bid to beat the world corn per acre record with a two acre hybrid planting on a Union Township site near Buck Creek. The plan calls for 3 kernels per hill and 18 inch by 40 inch spacing, with aggressive fertilization and soil tests as weekly checks. Committee members say the project aims to attract farmers to the National Plowing Matches and could push toward 300 bushels per acre if successful.
