4th strike in 50 years picketers shut railroads nationwide
The 13,000 member AFL-CIO Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen began a nationwide strike at 6:01 a.m., closing rail service across the country. Pickets appeared at Rapid Transit Staten Island Grand Central New York and Penn Central Baltimore with other lines to follow. Labor Secretary Hodgson said mediation would continue but offered no new talks. The stoppage halts passenger service for about 300,000 commuters in major cities and disrupts freight, with no special handling for perishables or military cargo.
