Traffic Deaths A Record Speeding Autos Prime Target Of Police
City traffic toll climbs to record levels as police launch a crackdown on speeders and reckless drivers, especially late at night. Lt. James Combs says four of five 1960s fatal crashes stemmed from excessive speed and shifts two patrolmen and a sergeant to the 3 to 11 hour patrols. Notable incidents include a 75 to 80 mph crash killing Shannon Morrison and injuring Norval Jackson, plus another fatal crash near an overpass blamed on speed. The drive follows several one car crashes between 1:45 and 5:40 a.m. City records show seven fatalities in 1957 and 1958, the highest prior tolls.
