Family Courage Against Rare Disease in Ramaker Family
Preston Minnesota AP reports the Ramaker family of Winfield and Valey with 17 children facing ataxia, a hereditary neurodegenerative disease. Three siblings show symptoms, including 20-year-old Mark, 11-year-old Cris, and 31-year-old Willa Snyder, while others display few signs. The condition, arising from a recessive gene, causes loss of coordination and slurred speech, and often leads to early death, though childhood onset allows longer lifespans with mobility loss. The family describes coping with fear, faith, and hope for a cure, maintaining a close, devout household despite the illness.
