Benedict XVI fast tracks John Paul II to sainthood and names Levada
Pope Benedict XVI authorized start of John Paul II’s sainthood process, waiving the usual five year wait and marking a rapid beatification path. He also named Archbishop William Levada, longtime doctrinal chief, as prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, a powerful Vatican post. Levada, 68, is an American conservative theologian and former archbishop of San Francisco. The announcement was made at St. John Lateran in Latin, amid the clergy, on the anniversary of an attempted 1981 assassination in St. Peter’s Square.
