Snake Worship Evidence Found On Sudan Site Of Ancient Town
Archaeologists report snake worship evidence at Amara, an ancient Egyptian town near Abri in northern Sudan. Excavations by the Egypt Exploration Society and Sudan Antiquities Service reveal a palace, main street, and a mud brick wall over 11 feet high. A garden and shrine yielded pots with snake skeletons and occasionally dog remains intertwined with snakes. A temple near the river bank bore a Ramesses II inscription, dating use to Egyptian occupation.
