Downtown Paint Contest Draws 80 Entrants In Middletown

Executive vice president Harold Kramer says the Chamber of Commerce Paint The Town contest drew about 80 entrants. Additional panels are added to Central Avenue sites, with entrants painting from 10 AM Saturday on a first come basis. Copters Downed in Saigon Command Report

Two Joint Military Commission helicopters carrying 10 Viet Cong and two South Vietnamese officers were forced down by gunfire near An Loc in Communist territory. Lt. Col. Le Trung Hien said there were no immediate casualty details as the aircraft returned to Saigon from Loc Ninh.

Guerrillas Hit Lebanese Post Near Syria Border

Palestinian guerrillas from Syria shelled the Arida border post in northern Lebanon. Lebanese troops returned fire and said the militants withdrew into Syria with no Lebanese casualties. The army noted continued shelling and a general withdrawal from the Bekka Valley after days of heavy fighting.

Rhodes cleared to run for Ohio governor again

Ohio Supreme Court rules former Republican Gov. James Rhodes may seek the governor’s office in 1974. In a 5-2 decision the court ordered Secretary of State Ted Brown to accept Rhodes’ nominating petitions after Brown refused them in February, citing a 1954 amendment limiting governors to two terms. Rhodes served 1963 to 1971 and argued eligibility.

Cloudy skies and lower temperatures are forecast for the Middletown area tonight with overnight lows in the 40s. Rain is expected Saturday with highs in the mid-50s, following yesterday’s high of 74 and overnight low of 55. 0.03 inch of rain was recorded. The Supreme Court found part of the amendment ambiguous, allowing a governor to serve as many terms as he may win as long as no more than two are successive, noting the 1954 language departed from a two-term lifetime limit.
