Food Prices Fall to Postwar Low on Retail Costs
The Agriculture Department reports retail food costs have dropped to the lowest since December 1950 largely due to lower farm prices. A fixed quantity costing 735 in 1952 could be bought for 701 by April this year. Beef declines drove much of the drop with some dairy and poultry prices also lower. Farm prices for food in Q1 1953 were 10 percent below the same period in 1952 while retail prices fell 3 percent. Marketing charges rose, keeping farmers at 46 cents of every consumer dollar, down 3 cents from last year. Wages in the food industry rose about 5 percent, contributing to higher marketing costs.
