Armco Steel Corp announces voluntary price cuts on key products effective May 12 to curb inflation. W. W. Sebald cites high costs and demand, noting sheet steel prices rose less than costs since 1939 while pledging to hold line if raw material costs keep rising.
An explosive blast blasted a two foot hole in the side of a Cleveland Heights residence and shattered nearby windows. No injuries were reported. Occupants Ralph S. Stewart 49 a new car dealer his wife and a visiting friend were present. Motive not known. The device appeared placed in the driveway near a brick porch.
Petitions to place Henry A. Wallace for president and Sen. Glen H. Taylor for vice president on the West Virginia ballot were filed with the secretary of state today.
The UAW plans a 9 a.m. Wednesday walkout of about 75,000 Chrysler workers as mediation continues. Negotiators sought a 30 cent hourly raise, while Chrysler offered none, with a national Chrysler conference to receive the union stance and map strike strategy.
The Senate Armed Services Committee approved a substitute to universal training allowing 18-year-olds to volunteer for military reserve training. The plan aims to train 11 000 youths and create a 70-group air force, with final action pending Forrestal review and concurrent House support.
The House Un American Activities Committee released a 160 page report accusing the Communist party of the United States of advocating violent overthrow of the government. It cites Marx Engels Lenin and Stalin as the creed and asserts control from the Soviet Union guided American Communists.
President Truman said the U S bid to Molotov for decent relations meant no new departure in American policy. He stressed no hostile designs toward the Soviet Union and noted no clear commitment to overall settlement at this time. The State Department said Smith gave Molotov a 500 word oral reply and left the door open for full discussion.
A 400 member CIO Stockhandlers Union in Chicago averted a strike four hours before the deadline. They accepted a new contract raising pay by six cents per hour retroactive to April 4. Union president Frank Monaghan said stockhandlers average about $1.05 hourly under the old contract. The union is linked to the CIO Packinghouse Workers Union which has been on strike since March 16 over wages.
In New Castle Pennsylvania a 15 year old boy Dominick Heo was killed by a shotgun booby trap triggered by brushing the door of junk dealer William Lathrop 68 The coroner said Heo bled to death from a hip wound and Lathrop described as bothered by intruders The coroner noted charges were delayed pending investigation
Edward W. Ricks 61 of Xenia died when his car collided with a truck in Dayton. Police investigated the fatal crash and identified the victim.
Washington AP reports House Appropriations Committee proposed a 56.06 million dollar funding bill for Congress with a rule barring federal pay to any legislative employee in a union whose leaders did not file the Taft-Hartley Act oath. The measure targets AFL CIO printers but could affect other unionized lawmakers. The panel also rejected a subcommittee plan to pay long distance calls. offices currently have government paid calls.
Jews say they opened the Jerusalem to Tel Aviv supply route after breaking Arab defenses in Bab El Wad gorge. Haganah engineers cleared remaining barriers allowing convoys to move, with a food convoy expected toward Jerusalem. A cease fire exists as British mandate ends Friday.
The CIO Steelworkers convention in Boston opened with a demand for at least a 10 percent yearly increase in steel output, criticizing recent "phony" boosts and urging expansion of basic facilities to add 10 million tons of ingots annually. The report notes January 1948 ingot capacity at 94,233,460 tons, about 1.25 million below wartime peak.
Railroads report normal operations across eastern and central hubs as three unions call off the 190000 engineer and fireman strike after a federal court injunction. Embargoes on perishables lifted. full service seen on major routes with some lines still uncertain today.
Vice Premier Luigi Einaudi emerged as the leading candidate for Italy’s presidency backed by the Christian Democrats. On the third ballot he won 462 votes, short of a two third majority, with a fourth ballot to decide. Provisional President Enrico De Nicola plans retirement after leading early ballots.
Railroad service through Middletown both passenger and freight continued today with no disruption as the nationwide strike was forestalled by the President seizing control of the railroads. New York Central said sleeper cars and usual accommodations remained. embargoes on livestock poultry and perishables were canceled. If the strike had begun, about 100 workers across the New York Central Baltimore and Ohio and Pennsylvania railroads would have faced layoffs.

Army Secretary Royall named a union management advisory group to assist in operating railroads under government control. unions demand wage settlement and caution that government action paused a strike only temporarily. Royall outlined seven regional commands led by civilian railroad presidents, all Army colonels.
In Charleston West Virginia two former senators Rush Holt and Matthew Neely seek renomination in a five candidate Democratic field. Republican challenger John Alderson Sims faces Chapman Revercomb with Harold E Stassen on the presidential ballot.
President Truman will send a message to Congress aimed at winning farmer support for the Democrats next November. Republican farm leaders say they are already pursuing a long range agricultural plan, while Anderson and Barkley led talks at the White House about the issue.
