Mrs. Lyndon B. Johnson enjoyed a wonderful evening at the Metropolitan Opera in New York despite a missing chair during Verdi's Trovatore. She stood and waved from her box after the third act, unhurt, and joked about the mishap.
After 10 hours of heavy fighting near Louroujina 15 miles south of Nicosia UN soldiers restored order. Greek Cypriots held hilltop positions to siege the village forcing 3 000 residents and 10 000 sheep and goats to shelter as Turkish Cypriots pressed for spring crops. Fulbright proposed moving Turkish Cypriots from the island, a plan Turkish sources said was rejected.
South Korea’s cabinet resigned amid party calls for more government representation. President Park Chung-hee accepted the resignations and appointed Foreign Minister Chung Il-kwon to succeed Premier Choi Doo-sun. Chung Il-kwon, a retired general, previously served as ambassador to the United States, France and Turkey.
A grand jury returned 137 indictments against 26 people tied to major parties amid a statewide corruption probe. House Speaker John F. Thompson and former official Charles Gibbon face charges including bribery and conspiracy as 10 corporations and 17 officials are named. Atty. Gen. Edward W. Brooke led the presentation. Thompson suspended himself. John Davoren acts as speaker.
Elmer Spee a 36 year old Macomb Township firefighter and four colleagues aided rescue in Chesterfield Township after a tornado. They pulled a young boy from wreckage, but he appeared dead. Spee recalls the boy reminded him of his own ill son who has cancer.
A deadly tornado outbreak struck southeastern Michigan, killing nine people in Chesterfield Township and injuring many more. Gov. Romney ordered federal aid talks and large-scale cleanup with 300 National Guardsmen and 200 state police patrolling the sealed area.
Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev arrived in Egypt for a 17 day state visit amid massive crowds in Alexandria and Cairo. President Nasser greeted him as 100 aides and Soviet security entourages accompanied the 70 year old leader. The Armenia liner, 21 gun salutes, and river delta tours marked the start of a propaganda push to expand Soviet influence in Africa and counter Red China.
Ngo Dinh Can, 53, brother of the late President Ngo Dinh Diem, was executed by firing squad in Saigon. He died blindfolded on a prison field after convictions for murder and crimes during his time as viceroy of Central Vietnam. Two Catholic priests prayed by his side as a military junta spokesman confirmed the mercy plea was refused.
President Johnson, fresh from six-state barnstorming, repeats appeals for civil rights and poverty eradication in New York. He vows to back the civil rights bill, urges constitutional protection for all citizens, and maintains unity across racial lines in remarks at a clothing workers event and related appearances at the World's Fair and Long Island venues.
Labor party won 2,576 of 4,500 council seats nationwide, boosting prospects of a Labour victory in the October general election. Conservatives secured 1,673 seats and Liberals 165 with independents and Communists taking the remainder.
Costa Rica's public security minister Fernando Goicoechea denied that anti Castro Cuban exile groups are training in the country for incursions into Cuba. He said authorities have found no evidence of any training activity in Costa Rica.
FBI traced a life policy over 50 000 on a man who boarded the Pacific Air Lines flight Reno to San Francisco. A revolver with six fired cartridges was linked to him. Pilot Ernest A. Clark was heard saying he was shot before the plane crashed near Concord killing four.
Former President Harry S Truman marks his 80th birthday with a celebratory event in Washington. Checks totaling eighty thousand dollars were given to establish a history chair in his name at Westminster College Fulton Missouri with numerous old colleagues in attendance from both parties. Johnson praised Truman for shaping foreign policy and influence.
