Police and her wealthy publishing executive father fear violence though elopement is ruled out. A clue places her with a man on a train to Grand Central. she was seen after leaving the train once but has disappeared since mid morning.
Senator Taft rebukes the Justice Department for allegedly avoiding action against union leaders who may swear they are not Communists. COLUMBUS AP Defense counsel said they expect to rest today in the fraternity murder trial of James D Heer a 21 year old former Marine and OSU student from Euclid charged with first degree murder in the fatal shooting of Jack T McKeown 21 Norwood Ohio the universitys daily newspaper managing editor Heers defense plans to present a doctor to argue he was too drunk to form intent witnesses cited a party at the fraternity house and a club dance the evening of the shooting If the defense rests as expected a jury of 10 women and two men could decide Heers fate by tonight or Wednesday. Heers mother Mrs Edith Heer was mentioned in court coverage.
Seven hundred employees of National Distillers Products Corp in Cincinnati walk out after contract talks fail. AFL Distillery Rectifying and Wine Workers No 32 reports the union says negotiations broke down. Louisville plant has been shut since last Friday as the contract expired at midnight May 1.
President Truman urged pushing western development despite opposition from privilege and greed. He promoted the Brannan Farm Plan to spur peace and prosperity and praised the Kortes dam as a source of wealth and strength. He framed critics as anti government in a cross country tour including Casper Wyoming and Lincoln Nebraska.

Chicago AP threat of a strike by railroad firemen against four major carriers at 6 am local time tomorrow escalated. Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen and carriers remain deadlocked as federal mediators vow last minute efforts to avert a walkout. The National Railway Mediation Board held late sessions with both sides. little hope was seen to prevent action. The walkout, against Santa Fe, Southern, and western divisions of New York Central and Pennsylvania, had been set for April 26 but was deferred two weeks for renewed talks.
Thomas K. Scott, 25, assistant postmaster at Vienna, died of a heart ailment yesterday while fighting a fire near Youngstown Municipal Airport. He acted as a brave volunteer in the effort, adding to the toll of the blaze fought near the airport area.
