Ohio Senate weighs jobless pay bill in 109th session

In Columbus the Senate considered an omnibus unemployment compensation bill by Sen. Howard Cook to raise benefits 20 percent and extend eligibility by 13 weeks during high unemployment. If extended to 39 weeks by January 1972, the federal government would finance half the extra cost, with a typical two-parent family likely gaining about $80 weekly in public aid. The measure would also extend coverage to state and local government employees and nonprofit workers. The House approved related civil service promotions legislation and resumes session later today.
