McNamara orders reduced airborne alert for B52 bombers
Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara told the House Appropriations Committee that the continuous B52 airborne alert, in place for over five years, is being cut back as radar warning systems now provide sufficient response. He noted some chiefs opposed total elimination and that about half the bomber fleet would stay on alert, with 18 minutes' warning, well within radar capacity during a Soviet ICBM attack.

Mcllwain said he would consider it if it were a first class operation, while Reams indicated no talks had occurred, though others said discussions had taken place. The State Central Committee would normally defer to the governor’s choice.
