Ohio voters favored a 500 million dollar highway bond measure with about 65 percent support. With 11,710 of 15,311 polling places reporting, Yes 890,012 No 470,097. Gov. James A. Rhodes praised the support following his prior 250 million education bond approval.
Richard D Kennedy Democratic candidate for Congress at large died at his West Side home after collapsing following an election night watch. He and his wife Evelyn had been up late awaiting returns and he later complained of chest pains. Kennedy, who described himself as a moderate, had a history of unsuccessful campaigns and was viewed by foes as racist. State officials prepared for a special session to enact a constitutional amendment, while highway bond supporters claimed the measure would speed up state road construction and create jobs.
In Ohio Taft defeats Brown for Republican nomination, winning about 78 percent to 22. Glenn withdraws late. Young defeats Glenn 70 to 30 in Democratic primary. Young vows to challenge Taft in November, framing the race as civil rights stakes.
Nationwide primary results show George Wallace drawing strong support in Indiana and Alabama while Republican Goldwater underperforms in some states. Ohio delegates to the Democratic National Convention are pledged to President Johnson via stand in Albert S Porter of Cleveland. In a three way race for the Democratic Congress at large nomination Robert E Sweeney of Cleveland outdistanced State Sen Charles J Carney and Richard P Kennedy both of Cleveland with Kennedy noted as a civil rights foe.
Two Navy vessels the destroyer USS Decatur and the aircraft carrier USS Lake Champlain collided at sea near Cape Henry early today. The Decatur based at Newport News Illinois suffered heavy damage to its super structure, though no personnel were injured according to the Navy in Boston.
After 48 days of talk in the Civil Rights dispute the Senate moves to the voting stage on a jury trial amendment to the bill. Democratic Leader Mansfield expects quick action but notes no firm timetable and possible delays from President Johnson's Appalachia trip.
In Cleveland and Cuyahoga County a 16.1 school operating levy led by strong margins with 800 of 1.1% polling places reporting 50 356 for to 34 666 against. Civil rights groups campaigned against it over Glenville elementary schools. The plan would raise about 58 290 000 yearly with a permanent 4 mill levy. The county 2 mill welfare levy and a 1 5 mill expansion levy for Cuyahoga Community College also led.
An early morning crash near Ironton Ohio left a car leaving Ohio Route 7 about 30 miles east of town striking a boulder. William St Milard 46 of Huntington West Virginia was killed.
Geneva negotiators from the United States Britain and the European Common Market approved a 50 percent across the board tariff reduction goal for the Kennedy Round. Final cuts will vary and may occur by 1965 or 1966, with aims to boost business and curb rising prices. Some Communist nations show support. France opposed any binding maximum target.
The Rev. Clayton K. Hewett, entering his 12th day of fasting to protest police brutality, was moved from a Delaware County courthouse annex jail to a Chester hospital for closer observation. Dr. Joseph Dimedio said Hewett is physically sound but weak from lack of food. Hewett, rector of Atonement Episcopal church in Morton, was arrested April 24 and charged with inciting to riot.
Gov. George Wallace claimed a victory for his states rights crusade in Indiana while Democratic Gov. Matthew Welsh kept the Johnson camp ahead. With 4240 of 4416 precincts counted Welsh led Wallace 355,682 to 165,457 and Goldwater led Republicans with 227,208 votes. Welsh blamed GOP ballot-switching for Wallace’s crossover gains and asserted the crossovers show broad support for Wallace’s philosophy.
In Washington, Democratic National Chairman John M Bailey called Welsh's showing an overwhelming victory a remarkable achievement in light of many local controversies that exist today in any state.
