Wilson Hits WSB and Seeks Curtailment of Authority
Former mobilization chief Charles E Wilson testified before the House Labor Committee, urging the Wage Stabilization Board to lose power to recommend settlements. He argued the boards steel case exceeded proper wage and price stabilization, contending a nine cent hourly catch up wage for steelworkers and concern over cost absorption. Wilson described behind the scenes government pressure and said Truman sought compromise but faced refusals from Ar nell and Putnam as Ar nell resisted large increases. The committee chair indicated a broad probe into WSB operations will proceed.
