In Lima Ohio a Bath High School sophomore Bill Brunk built a monkey skeleton for a biology project over weeks. The completed display was transported home on a board in the family car without damage after a bumpy ride, then briefly shown to a superintendent before mishap occurred.
Washington reports sharp disagreement over a Public Board recommendation for a 102 cent average hourly wage increase totaling about 100 million annually for 450,000 nonoperating rail union members. Union leaders argue the raise is too small while rail executives warn it is unaffordable and harmful to the industry.
New Castle Pennsylvania AP reports Amish Bishop Andy M Byler of New Wilmington says the Old Order group is considering resettlement in Australia to escape what he calls religious persecution in the United States. He notes Ohio Amish who moved to Canada over compulsory public school education dispute. The group clashes with government over Social Security taxes, arguing it is insurance and that households must provide for themselves. Byler says leaving would be hard but possible if Social Security tax exemptions are not granted.

In Tokyo a three train wreck left 163 dead and more than 380 injured. An engineer Norifumi Minakami aged 38 and three other train workers were arrested on suspicion of criminal negligence. A midnight blaze destroyed a barn on the Dayton State hospital farm in Kettering. No one was inside and no injuries were reported. The fire, the second at the hospital grounds in three weeks, began just before 11 p.m. Six newborn calves were in the barn but were evacuated earlier. The nearby hospital laundry was also destroyed and is under investigation. The farm lies about two miles from the main hospital. no patients live nearby.

An Ohio Highway Patrol Auxiliary member investigating a truck auto collision south of Marion discovered the victims were his children. Marci Jean Davis 18 and Phillip 12, children of Vernon and wife from Green Camp, died. The car passengers included James C. Denman 7 with a broken leg. Semitrailer driver David H. Hilliard 3 of near Bellefontaine had minor injuries and was released.
