By noon, guerrilla and army leaders sought to enforce a cease fire in Beirut as sporadic shots and ambulance sirens continued. Joint patrols were announced to enforce the truce while Tel Zatar remained volatile and fighting spread to Sidon 24 miles south.
The Associated Press notes burglars targeted Manhattan offices of Janet Travell and Eugene Cohen, Kennedy’s doctors, seeking medical files but failed to find the documents kept under a pseudonym. Cohen and Travell defended Kennedy’s health amid prior campaign rumors.
Outgoing White House aides H.R. Haldeman and John D. Ehrlichman were slated to meet the Watergate prosecutor and Senate investigators on neutral ground as indictments loomed over their alleged involvement in the Watergate coverup. The Watergate grand jury heard testimony from Jeb Magruder and E. Howard Hunt Jr. as further probes continued.
The Justice Department accuses the Nixon re election campaign of failing to report a 200000 contribution from financier Robert Vesco, tied to a separate 50000 donation. The grand jury in New York probes whether the funds aimed to influence Vesco’s civil suit over $224 million in mutual funds. Maurice Stans and John Mitchell testified. the information targets election law violations with a 3000 dollar maximum fine.
French sources say President Nixon will meet President Georges Pompidou in Iceland at the end of May. The leaders are expected to confer on May 31 and June 1 with a communique to follow in Washington and Paris.
The Brotherhood of Railway and Airline Clerks announces a tentative agreement with REA Express Co ending a nationwide strike affecting about 15,000 workers. Union president D L Dennis said the deal includes significant wage improvements and retroactive pay to July 1, 1971.
President Nixon announced new steps to slow price increases by large companies. Firms with annual sales over 250 million must notify the government 30 days before raising average prices by more than 1.5 percent above Jan 10 levels, delaying hikes to allow review. The move expands enforcement staff and requires detailed reporting from the 650 largest firms.
John Monroe Krafft of Springfield Ohio a Miami University student who is blind will receive a $500 scholastic achievement award in Washington from Julie Nixon Eisenhower. He plans to use the prize toward moving to SUNY Buffalo for a Woodburn Fellowship in English a $4000 yearly three year program to become a university instructor. He has studied with tape recordings and readers.
Forecasters call for clearing skies in the Middletown area with temperatures dropping to the upper 30s tonight. Friday should bring sunny skies and near 60 degree highs, after yesterday's 71 high and 45 overnight low. An inch and a half of rain was recorded. Weather details are on page 21.
