Magic of Broadcasting fails to cohere on CBS special
Cynthia Lowry reviews a CBS Sunday night special titled The Magic of Broadcasting. The program juxtaposes radio pioneers, early TV history, and profiles from Fannie Brice to Rod Serling, but meanders with mismatched segments a young folk duo and a Lucille Ball rehearsal, leaving the viewer unsure of its point. The host, guests, and archival clips mix nostalgia with critique of live drama, while Serling defends the golden era of live television before its decline. The overall effect is a scattered tour through broadcasting history rather than a sharp, unified tribute.
