A city patio can become a lasting retreat with thoughtful planting. Readers learn to build elevated wall planters, choose cascading flowers like red geraniums and white petunias, and use durable wood boxes for five to six years of beauty.
A garden guide explains transplanting seedlings when they crowd their container. Water the root mat, drain, then prepare ready pots and growing medium. Some gardeners use inert materials like vermiculite perlite or milled sphagnum moss or their mixture to support nourishment.
The text explains using dilute fertilizer or soil blends like peat moss and sand, sieving for fine particles, wetting and draining the medium, and using a fork to lift seedlings. It advises separating clinging plants, centering one seedling in a three quarter full pot, adding medium around roots, firming, and leaving space for watering.
Geranium time arrives with cheerful 4-inch clay container plants ideal for window boxes planters and borders. Terra cotta pots and saucers enhance the country style when kept above ground, matching the plant’s charm and ease of use.
The text notes perennial grass weeds are hard to manage in fine textured lawns. Hand pulling coarse grass or using general herbicides like dalapon amitrol or paraquat followed by reseeding is suggested. Autumn is ideal for these tasks or remaking the lawn with fine-textured seed or sod to prevent coarse grasses.
The National Garden Bureau introduces a 72 page booklet titled Four Seasons of Fun for Youngsters with 34 seed and flower based activities for ages three to 14. The guide features seasonal winter through autumn projects and targets parents teachers and youth leaders. Available from National Garden Bureau Birmingham Michigan 48008 priced at $1.25 postpaid.
