Dickens Letter Expresses Bitter Disappointment In America
An unpublished April 1 1842 letter from Charles Dickens written aboard a boat between Pittsburgh and Cincinnati expresses sharp dismay at the United States and its politics. Displayed at the Pierpont Morgan Library for Dickens centenary, the note critiques Liberty and calls out national strife, party press and government failures. Dr Charles A Ryskamp notes the letter was acquired in 1950 as part of a larger lot of letters.
