Opinions Vary On Cost Of Bill To Reduce Police Fire Hours
A bill to cut firemen hours to 63 a week and policemen to 44 was favorably reported by the House Committee of State Government in Columbus. Middletown officials disagree on cost with City Attorney Fred Schatzmann estimating about $23,000 extra for fire and $11,000 for police on a calendar-year basis, while firemen project $12,000 more by nine hours less. The plan would add four officers to the fire force, raising total personnel and reserve strength, a need underscored after a recent Central Ave fire. Present shifts are 24 hours for 35 firemen and eight-hour duty for three men, with every off day shifting from every 14 to every eight days. Toledo, Cleveland, and Columbus would be unaffected. The 1939 change from 84 to 72 hours and wartime staffing history are noted as context.
