First Man in Space Yuri Gagarin Dies in Crash
Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, first human in space in 1961, died in a training-flight crash with Col. Vladimir Seryogin. Both ashes to be honored on the Kremlin Wall. Gagarin, 34, rose to fame after his one orbit around Earth and paratrooped to safety near Smelovki. He is survived by wife Valentina and two daughters Elena and Galya.

B52s Bomb Redoubt Near Hue to Deter New Threat
US Air Force B52 bombers pounded the A Shau Valley west of Hue with hundreds of tons of explosives in five missions to blunt a new North Vietnamese buildup. Thirty five Stratofortresses hit truck parks, bunkers, depots and guns while two more missions targeted Khe Sanh. Marines at Khe Sanh reported light shelling and casualties. Russian trucks have been seen nearby and Route 547 from A Shau to Hue has been rebuilt. An offensive near Saigon began 18 days ago, with 50,000 troops aiming to clear enemy forces. Allied fatalities stand at 178 with 12 enemy killed per allied loss.
