Ministers Go Skid Row to See City Problems Up Close
The Rev. Roger Gallagher and the Rev. Fred Penner spent a weekend on Chicago’s Skid Row as part of the Urban Training Center for Christian Mission UTC. They wore ragged clothes, endured stench and danger, and relied on small handouts while observing life among derelicts. UTC trains clergy and laypeople for urban ministry, focusing on involvement and reflection as paths to modern city service. The program, now five months old, is supported by a dozen Protestant groups, with classes and fieldwork across metropolitan centers.

France to modernize armed forces by 1970 amid costs
Paris AP report says De Gaulle's plan aims to six nuclear armed divisions by 1970 with 1965 starting a costly new era in France's armament policy. The program, costing about 4.21 billion dollars, weighs on the national budget, yet French discourse broadly supports building an independent nuclear capability and contributing to allied defense if needed.
