Marshall Sees Graver Crisis Than Last Fall
Washington AP Secretary of Defense Marshall warned Congress may alter pending draft and Universal Military Training bills. He said the world situation now is fiercer than last fall in Korea. Two federalized National Guard divisions bound for Japan would sail later this week. He urged protecting draft legislation from crippling amendments and called for an enduring program to ensure military readiness, including expansion of the National Guard. He noted surprise at higher volunteer enlistments after Pentagon cut the April draft quota and questioned waning interest in the new programs.
