Wallenda’s funeral held in Sarasota shadowed by balance pole
Karl Wallenda lay in state at Robarts Sports Arena as the 73-year-old high wire legend was remembered by friends and fans. A 24 foot balance pole hung above the bronze coffin while burial was set for today. Wallenda died after a gust of wind toppled him from a hotel-wire high line in San Juan Puerto Rico. His return to Sarasota capped a career marked by spectacular feats and fatal accidents including a 1962 pyramid collapse that killed two troupe members and paralyzed Mario Wallenda.
