Corn sugar breakthrough could curb U S sugar imports
Washington AP The NAS forum heard Sidney Cantor describe a corn syrup breakthrough turning corn into a sugar substitute with sweetness and calories near cane sugar. If sugar exporting nations curb prices, this could slash imports, since about half of U S sugar comes from beets and cane. Cantor notes one billion pounds produced last year, with potential to triple in four years. He credits late 1950s funding by Japan and Clinton Corn Processing for the key enzyme reuse enabling a dextrose to half glucose half fructose conversion.
