TV adapts Kiss Me Kate from stage to ABC
The 90 minute TV version on ABC retained Porters witty songs and lavish sets but faltered on the play within a play device. Robert Goulet impressed in swashbuckling costumes and song, Carol Lawrence displayed strong dance moments but faltered in convincing shrew scenes, Michael Callan and Jessica Walter showed standout talents, while supporting bits by Marty Ingels and Jules Munshin undercut pace. The piece adds contemporized book touches and casts Russell Nye as a politician, with Goulet dropping modern slang at times.
