Wallace Says State Safer Than New York After Liuzzo Death
Gov. George C. Wallace expressed regret over the killing of Viola Gregg Liuzzo a 39 year old Detroit mother of five during a Lowndes County incident. He defended Alabama as safer than New York subways and urged calm while condemning violence by civil rights leaders he accused of not living in Alabama. He urged networks to bring in J Edgar Hoover for records and said he would meet with representative Alabama citizens while noting some protesters were non residents or had criminal records.
