The Des Plaines city council approves a nine page ordinance banning crying shouting and loud noises from instruments radios phonographs and other devices within 600 feet of homes or hospitals. It sets decibel limits 74 now 65 by 1978 and requires vehicle engines to idle off near streets with fines from 15 to 300 dollars and up to six months in jail for repeat offenses.
Washington AP President Nixon blames the nation s middlemen not farmers for soaring food prices and vows to crack down if prices do not start to drop. He says action will target middlemen to reduce costs for consumers.
Five people died in a head on crash on Ohio 60 about five miles north of Marietta. Three Parkersburg residents and two Ohioans died from burns and injuries after one car burst into flames. A fourth occupant remained in critical condition. The incident followed reports of rising living costs and a Nixon news conference at Camp David.
Secret Service agents detained a young man against a wall in the California statehouse corridor as Hubert Hump hrey walked by. The officers red facedly questioned him before learning the situation.
Ohio Supreme Court clears way for a statewide referendum on the income tax. Attorneys say passage would repeal the budget and tax provisions including severance tax and cigarette tax while critics contend only income taxes would be affected. Rep. Tulley says the Legislature can adjust the budget. signing petitions could confirm ballot timing by Oct. 1.
Tass reports Russia launched Cosmos 480, latest earth satellite in the series. Orbit reached a high point of 753 miles and a low point of 735 miles.
Forecast warns of rain or snow showers early tonight with temperatures dropping to the low 30s. Sunday outlook is mostly sunny with highs near 45 degrees.
Gov. John Gilligan and Warden Harold Cardwell vowed immediate action to end a work slowdown at the Ohio Penitentiary in Columbus. Cardwell ordered guards to work or leave as about 50 of 135 guards called in sick after a hazardous duty pay dispute stalled. Order remains steady despite reduced staff.
Ohio and the Penn Central Railroad agreed to a 9.5 million cut in property tax assessments for 1966 71, disclosed in the County Auditor's Association newsletter. The railroad has paid no taxes since its June 1970 federal reorganization filing, and prepayable taxes may be credited toward any pending state taxes.
Tentative Lordstown Ohio terms end a 21 day UAW strike over work standards. A strike threat targets GM Norwood Ohio as Local 674 negotiates over production standards grievances and local agreements. If ratified by 7,800 Lordstown workers Vega production resumes on second shift Monday and the Lordstown van plant on Tuesday.
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee launches a long range inquiry into multinational corporate influence on U.S. foreign policy. Chairman Fulbright says the study will re-examine the belief that private investment benefits both the U.S. and recipient nations. Anderson released ITT and CIA memos alleging efforts to block Allende’s Chilean presidency.
Lella Begley of London Township, Michigan, found thousands of shoes piling around her property, left by unknown dumpers over a year. Police and township officials investigate as piles grow, some 3 feet high and sprawling across fields and woods. Begley began charging two dollars to search the piles after loiterers damaged her strawberry patch and threatened a fire.
