Dowling Receives Jaycees Honor in Middleton
R C Dick Dowling known as The Major became the 11th Middletonian named an honorary life member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce. The 85 year old resident of 110 Kenwood Dr was lauded for public service including 46 years as assistant postmaster and work to bring a public library to Middletown. He helped fund city concerts and the high school band trip to the 1964 World’s Fair, and supported youth and athletic programs. The event included a check presentation to the Community Guild for Middletown Hospital.

John W. Davis 81 veteran constitutional lawyer and 1924 Democratic presidential nominee lay in state as he died of pneumonia. A New Yorker by birth he will be buried in Locust Valley Cemetery after services at Brick Presbyterian Church New York. Davis served as ambassador to Britain 1918 21 and as U S solicitor general 1913 18. He argued steel seizure cases before the Supreme Court and argued South Carolina’s school case.
