Price climb steepest in 23 years

Washington reports February consumer prices rose eight-tenths of a percent on seasonally adjusted basis, the largest monthly gain since February 1951. Food costs jumped 2.2 percent overall and grocery store purchases up 2.4 percent, with meats poultry and fish up 5 percent.

The U S dollar fell slightly in European trading as markets adjust to new floating rates. Tokyo markets were closed for a holiday. In London the pound rose about half a cent as higher British rates attracted buyers, not dollar weakness.

Indian leaders say federal response lukewarm at Wounded Knee

Interior Department spokesman James Hars ter said Red Cross and BIA aid 244 Sioux refugees at Pine Ridge and Wounded Knee as the occupation costs the Oglala Sioux tribe about 15 000 a day. He noted 387 proposed homes delayed but later corrected to 25 at Wounded Knee with no gunfire reported as federal marshals arrest two people on the reservation.

The majority reversed a three judge federal court that held Texas school finance violates the 14th Amendment by tying school quality to local wealth. Justice Powell said reform is needed but the ultimate fix must come from lawmakers and democratic pressures.

Abandoned baby mother granted home return on bond

Betty Jean Anderson 23, a Southern University senior, is charged with attempted murder in a federal case. U S District Judge Contie freed her on 5000 dollar bond to return to Baton Rouge while awaiting her next court appearance. FBI says she gave birth Feb 19 on a United Airlines flight from Pittsburgh to Youngstown and abandoned the newborn in a toilet. The baby is in a foster home in Trumbull County and custody battles loom between the county and Anderson.
