Court Action Against Three Veterans Village Tenants

The City of Middletown will seek eviction of three tenants at Veterans Village tomorrow in Civil Court. James Klackner 5A Donald Gunckle 7B and Lester Wills 21B face forcible detention claims before Judge Alton H. Combs. Klackner owes 17 months back rent totaling 561 dollars. Gunckle 15 months totaling 495. Wills 14 months totaling 420. Petitions filed March 9 by the city, signatures of John P. Meehan and Fred J. Schatzmann. An audit of Veterans affairs accounts is underway by federal authorities. The 50 units were built by the federal government in 1946, then turned over to the city. Meehan noted most residents are good renters. the village green was recently painted and sodded. Removal of the village was planned for 1950 but low-cost housing shortages may prevent it. Tomorrow’s action covers eviction only. back rent will be pursued in later filings.
