Don Chaffee says his pledge to his astronaut son has pushed him into about 75000 dollars debt while promoting the space program across 11 states. He turned to speaking engagements after Roger Chaffee and two others died in 1967, sacrificing his real estate career and family income.
U S District Judge Sirica ordered transferring the secret grand jury Watergate report to the House Judiciary Committee for impeachment inquiry with a two day delay for appeals. Lawyers for Haldeman Ehrlichman and Mitchell signal possible appeals though Ford supports the decision.
The House Judiciary Committee officials defend requesting 42 Nixon tape recordings as specific to the impeachment inquiry. Chairman Rodino and counsel Doar say subpoenas could follow if White House talks fail, though negotiations continue with St Clair. Rodino notes no denial from the White House yet and Doar stresses necessity of cited reasons.
A Wilmington couple died likely of smoke inhalation when their home burned Monday night. Authorities identified the victims as Leslie Campbell in his 60s and his wife Florence in her 40s. Firemen said the blaze started in a living room couch and probably was sparked by a dropped cigarette.
Major oil firms say prices will stay high and supply tight for two to three months despite lift of the Arab oil embargo. They warn conservation remains essential as crude from the Middle East takes 60 to 90 days to reach U S consumers and gasoline lines ease gradually.
Cloudy skies and overnight lows in the 30s are forecast for the Middletown area tonight with Wednesday highs in the low 40s. Yesterday's high reached 52 and the overnight low 46. The extended outlook shows a chance of showers Thursday and again Friday or Saturday with highs in the 40s and overnight lows in the 20s.
Three Wooster residents were charged with extortion after demanding free radio time and threatening a hostage. They formed The Alternative Political Action Committee Inc on Feb 5, with Cooper as acting president and cocharterers McCutcheon and Holmes signing. FBI arrested them without resistance in their Wooster apartment.
The Cost of Living Council announced price and wage controls are lifted for most canned fruits and vegetables except for 10 major firms agreeing not to raise prices for now. The move affects 1,223 firms with 96,000 workers and $4.4 billion in 1973 sales, as producers plan up to 25 percent output increase for the 1974-75 crop.
