Reports from Lima say 37 engineers and their escort were rescued by 50 to 75 Peruvian soldiers who hacked through the jungle to reach a knoll where the road surveying team sheltered during a week long siege by Indian forces. One engineer is believed killed.
Ottawa officials awaited a response from union seamen after Hal Banks, 55, US born labor leader, was removed from the presidency of the Seafarer International Union of Canada amid the Great Lakes shipping dispute. The government board of trustees ordered the dismissal.
Greek Cypriots fired mortars toward Ghaziveran, a Turkish Cypriot village 28 miles west of Nicosia, amid roadblock tensions on Cyprus. Turkish Cypriot Letka leaders warned attacks if firing continued, while British officials reported helicopter deliveries of Turkish Cypriot leaders and brief clashes.
Explorer satellite failed to reach orbit after Delta booster third stage burned only 22 seconds. Cape Kennedy launched at 6 14 am EST with a 120 pound payload intended for a 700 mile high orbit to survey the ionosphere for global radio measurements.
President Charles de Gaulle wraps a three day official visit to Mexico City with plans to depart for Guadalupe. In a joint communique with Adolfo Lopez Mateos the leaders promise concerted action at the Geneva Trade Conference to improve Latin American prices and strengthen ties with the European Common Market.
In Burbank California a 57 year old woman, Adeline M. Kehee, died minutes after drinking boiling cyanide solution she mistook for coffee on her first day at a metals firm. Police described the amber colored liquid as cyanide used in metal processing.
In a jail letter Jack Ruby denounces his head attorney Melvin Belli saying he has tried to disengage since January 22. Belli in Mexico City declined comment. Ruby was convicted of killing Lee Harvey Oswald and sentenced to death. Belli called the verdict a kangaroo trial and Dallas a festering sore.
The ABA president called Bellis remarks in temperate and abusive. Belli was unavailable for comment. He was in Moxico City. Ruby's sister Eva Grant said she sent the dismissal letter by airmail Wednesday night to Bellis San Francisco law office.
At the 17 nation disarmament conference in Geneva U S negotiator Adrian Fisher proposed that the United States and the Soviet Union each destroy 480 strategic bombers over two years. The plan targets American B47s and Soviet TU16 Badgers and differs from a full total destruction demand. Fisher also offered to eliminate additional planes from mothball reserves.
Fisher argues that destroying planes must be done under strict observation by the other nation. He says the B47 and the TU16 bombers are logical starting arms for arms destruction and notes roughly equal numbers and similar strategic roles for the United States and the Soviet Union.
Walter P Reuther says AFL CIO United Auto Workers will demand vacation bonus pay and a coffee break for production workers as part of contract improvements. The union also seeks a wage increase with three year contracts due to expire Aug 31. negotiations begin 60 days earlier.
Two Nashville residents Christine Burke and Norma June McGriff were charged in federal court for a telephone threat to Texas Governor John Connally. They were arrested in Nashville, released on bond, and may be tried in San Antonio. The FBI said one call was made with two conspirators present. Connally declined further comment.
President Johnson requests 3.4 billion dollars in foreign aid for fiscal year starting July 1 to counter communism and poverty. He backs continuing arms aid with annual review and streamlining steps to boost efficiency and self sufficiency in recipient nations.
University president and board uphold professors right to publish controversial critique of President Kennedy. Revilo P. Oliver, 44, wrote in American Opinion that Kennedy’s memory would be cherished with distaste and suggested he was sacrificed by Communist forces. Trustees approve faculty panel stance allowing consequences but no dismissal.
