Cyprus Quiet as Canadian Troops Arrive on Cyprus

In Nicosia an additional 223 Canadian soldiers joined the U N peacekeeping force and five Canadian Royal Air Force transports were en route wearing blue U N berets. The island remained calm though Greek and Turkish Cypriots stayed tense as the lull persisted into the sixth day. Members of Canada's Royal 22nd Regiment boarded planes in Quebec for the mission.

Canadians set to deploy 1150 in Cyprus by March 24

Additional soldiers depart by air from Quebec and Halifax with 100 troops and 60 vehicles loaded in Halifax for Wednesday. The 1150 man Canadian contingent aims to reach Cyprus by March 24 as Finland Sweden and Ireland pledge more manpower. U Thant eyes a 7000 strong UN police force including 3500 from current British peacekeepers. The Greek Cypriot government welcomes the Canadians while unrest on the island eases and Cypriots celebrate in Nicosia near the green line.

Brendan Behan In Coma In Dublin Hospital

Brendan Behan, 41, remained in a diabetic coma at Meath Hospital in Dublin after failing to respond to treatment Doctors say he was slightly improved but still unconscious His wife Beatrice 38 and a priest were his only visitors Behan was admitted last Tuesday with old diabetes and liver problems his third spell in hospital since Christmas Friends say the birth of his daughter last November worsened his condition.

Blue Angel Lt Neale Dies After Jet Failure

Lt George N Neale 29 one of the Navy Blue Angel pilots died when his parachute failed to fully open after ejecting from a crippled jet. The flight team was returning to Pensacola from an air show near West Palm Beach when the mechanical failure occurred west of Apalachicola. A witness heard a popping noise before the jet crashed about 200 yards from their home. The pilot ejected at an estimated 150 to 200 feet.
