Deep Ice Age Fragments Unearthed In Ohio Water Field
Archaeologists report 125 foot deep drill samples from Middletown’s Smith Farm well field reveal ancient giant tree trunks buried under glacial gravel. Scientists, including Miami University geologist Roy Reinhart, plan carbon tests to date the glacier waves. Preglacial forests held spruce, hemlock, tamarack and cedar while mammoth and megatherium roamed the Miami Valley.

Was Man Here in Those Days
Anthropologists argue ancient Americans lived 9000 years ago in Alabama caves. Carbon tests date the remains, but little everyday life remains visible today. Buried underground, only fragments like weed chips from last week’s well drilling hint at the era.

First Diggers Then Captains Old Canal Days Gave Middletown Irish
Irish immigrants arrived in Middletown in 1825 to dig the Miami Erie Canal joining Lake Erie to the Ohio River. Governor Clinton and Ohio officials attended the ceremony while Irish workers built shanties, endured malaria, and earned daily wages as canal crews. Bill Rogers, the toughest canal captain, led the Black Dragon until his Mary Conners married him and he resumed work driving the mules on the towpath.
