Britain’s Labor Government solidified its slim majority by defeating a Conservative motion criticizing spending. The 314 to 289 vote followed Labour’s earlier 14 vote win amid Churchill pressure and Liberal support.
Lustron Corporation will stay in business until April 3 under a 30 day reprieve granted by U S District Judge Melt G Underwood. Receiver Clyde M Foraker will operate the plant under tight cost control as about 800 workers remain employed and top executives were ousted to cut losses. The judge tied continued operation to funding from the Reconstruction Finance Corporation and considered allegations over an outstanding loan default involving Carl Strandlund.
Nine year old actress Lora Lee Michel fled her foster home in pajamas after her foster mother left. Mrs Mary Miller died yesterday in Cleveland after living there 60 years. A native of Ontario Canada she celebrated her 10th birthday last December 28 and was 60 years old.
The Air Force plans restructure nine B 29 and B 50 bomber groups to 45 aircraft each with 20 tankers per group. Tankers boost combat radius from about 2 000 to 3 000 miles via in flight refueling. The move enables unescorted flight in bad weather or darkness and foresees smaller, irregular formations in war.
Cecil L. Wright 42 completes a 60 day jail term at the City House of Correction in Chicago. Deputies will escort him to Couch County Jail where Sheriff Ammann of Macon County Illinois seeks Wright on a charge of defrauding an innkeeper with a bad check for 108.89 dollars at a lawn hotel in Decatur.
In Quebec AP report, J Albert Guay is found guilty of murdering his wife Rita and causing a deadly air crash with a time bomb. The prosecution claims he plotted the crash for love and wealth. the defense disputes intent as jurors prepare to render a verdict.
London reports Czech Foreign Minister Vlado Clementis has resigned at a Prague cabinet meeting. Premier Antonin Zapotocky announced the move and Gottwald accepted it, with the post to be filled by Vice Premier Vilhelm Szakas. Rumors of Clementis falling from favor had circulated since last summer.
Mrs. Alice Blake, 23, pleaded innocent to a second-degree murder charge in the shotgun death of her husband Edward, 27, at their Bell Jaire home after a quarrel over shorts and their 15 month old daughter. Prosecutor William H. Irwin cited a dispute over paternity. Bond set at 5000. she remained jailed in Belmont County.
Cleveland transit system boiler fireman Michael Karpinets aged 32 was questioned again by detectives in an effort to connect him with a spate of attacks on women and children on the east side. He became hysterical during a lie detector test and was jailed after a confrontation with Patrolman Joseph Prucha who said the man choked and threatened a 32 year old waitress.
President Truman’s 21 reorganization proposals face early criticism as lawmakers react to plans to curb NLRB General Counsel Robert N. Denham and to abolish the Maritime Commission. Critics say the Denham curbs threaten Taft Hartley policy and labor relations balance. The proposals take effect in 60 days unless Congress rejects them.
London AP reports Mrs Florence Arliss widow of actor George Arliss died Sunday at her suburban home. Arliss died in 1946 at 77 and the couple, married 47 years, appeared together in the film Tern Towana.
In Alabama night prowlers suspected of Ku Klux Klan ties renew a wave of mob terror. Four men face murder charges in the Pell City Feb 22 killing of Charlie Hurst amid masked hoodlum history. In Birmingham 18 men indicted for flogging and related crimes linked to the Klan continue through trials and mistrials.
Senator McCarthy alleges Gustavo Duran, a former Spanish Republican Army officer, was given a high post despite U S Army reports labeling him a Russian agent. He also cites Dr Harlow Shapley and John Stewart Service as security risks and calls for Senate investigators to verify these claims.
