California Senate leader ends 30 year watchdog on communists
Sacramento AP James Mills president pro tem of the state Senate moved to abolish the 30 year old watchdog committee on un American activities after discovering he and other lawmakers were listed in its files. Mills said the snooping betrays the United States values and the committee will halt its practice. The committee’s 1970 report warned of a serious Communist threat, while Mills revealed his own file showed subscription to The People’s World and attendance at an ILWU meeting. Other legislators were listed for voting against the committee’s appropriations. The committee, five members, relied on media and informants and has no hearings. It ends each year and must be reconstituted by the Rules Committee.
