A British army chauffeur, Cpl. Douglas Frederick Day of the Royal Air Force, was seriously wounded by East German border guards near Potsdam while driving a staff car to the Potsdam liaison mission HQ. He underwent surgery for a stomach bullet wound as Soviet authorities expressed regret.
Two Lima men, parolees Larry Hance and Robert Lafferty, admit they were on the scene when Elida Mayor Clarence Prince was shot Saturday. Hance says Lafferty fired. Lafferty accuses Hance of being the triggerman. They face tests as detectives pursue the case. Prince, 54, was shot near a suspicious car. Authorities say they planned a bank robbery but give no bank details or timing.
A car on an official British mission in East Germany was fired on by East German guards near Stahnsdorf, about a half mile inside the border. Brig. J. R. Holden spoke with a Soviet liaison officer. East German authorities claim the vehicle ran a stop signal and forced a tire shot to stop it.
